Peter Bourjos Just Happy To Be Standing

Think Peter Bourjos flashed speed last season? Just imagine what he can do without that pesky hip injury.

After offseason hip surgery to address persistent pain — pain that Bourjos said made it difficult to get out of bed and stand up without falling down — the speedy centerfielder is ready to get back to work.

“I just want to be healthy,” he said when asked of his goals for 2015. That’s quite change from a year ago when he was the new guy in town.

“Last year, I had to win playing time and prove I belonged on this team. That’s the same this year, but I’m comfortable here now. I know everybody. I know how things work.”

The way it works in 2015 is already becoming clear. Jay has the backing of the front office — this time from the outset — and that leaves Bourjos wondering where he may fit in a crowded outfield.

“I’ve never played a corner outfield spot in the big leagues before,” Bourjos said. “But anytime you can run down a ball — whether in left or right field – it’s fun taking away hits.”

And hey, what’s one more change for a guy quickly becoming all too familiar with the concept over his last two seasons of professional baseball?

“It was a new team last year,” he said. “I didn’t know anybody, and I didn’t know how they did certain things. I was in Anaheim for 8 or 9 years. That was kind of my home. Getting traded to a new place, it was tough learning how the Cardinals do things.

“So, I think in that sense, it’s going to be an easier adjustment.”

Being able to stand up without falling down should make it a bit easier too. Of course, the Cardinals don’t want Bourjos to stand.

They want him to run.
