UCB Predictions Project: National League West

A quick reminder: We’re suspending our usual schedule this week in order to participate in the annual UCB Predictions Project. We’ll be back on track next week with our Tuesday edition of Bird Watching (the podcast may or may not go up considering the Easter holiday). Enjoy!

I started to treat the NL West as I would any other division in the National League during the predictions project…and then I realized that I don’t know the division anywhere near well-enough to talk intelligently about any team. So…I’ll just treat it like I did the American League – quick rankings and a little write-up at the end. Here we go!

1. Los Angeles Dodgers
2. San Francisco Giants
3. Arizona Diamondbacks
4. San Diego Padres
5. Colorado Rockies

At some point, that Dodgers payroll has to…uh…pay off, right? The ownership group is so financially committed to making the playoffs, I don’t believe anything is going to dissuade them. Injury to a star player? No problem. We’ll just buy another, whether through unexpected trades or just flat out taking on salary. Whatever it takes to win right this minute, that’s what the Dodgers are going to do. Of course, the Giants are the defending champions…who pretty much did just what the ’06 Cardinals did after winning the Series. Re-commit to existing players, stand pat, and attempt to continue winning with the same team from last year…while their biggest competitor does everything in their power to chase you down. Obviously, I exaggerate, but my concern is the same. The Dodgers are in it to win it while the Giants are content to give it a go with the familiar. In this division, no one else matters. The D-backs will be decent. The Padres…eh, who knows? And the Rockies continue to pretend like they know what they’re doing while holding onto a soon-to-be $20 million a year shortstop. Expect a dogfight between LA and San Fran for the division title, but they’ll trip over each other on their way to a Wild Card spot. Only the NL West champ sees October from this division.

Don’t believe me? No problem. CLICK HERE to read what the other UCB’ers are saying about the NL West and every other division in baseball.
