Has the race for the bench evened out a bit? Early on, it looked like Allen Craig was going to run away with the last bench spot on the team…and then he started slumping a bit. Sure, Stavinoha hasn’t exactly tore it up in recent games, but his stats are still impressive.
Take today’s game thus far (even though I can’t hear the damn thing ’cause MLB Audio sucks)…Stav survives a 13-pitch AB to bloop an RBI single (thanks to @BJRains for the update)…Craig makes a throwing error in the field.
I also wonder…with Yadi’s return expected sometime around Opening Day…is Stavinoha’s ability to act as a third catcher helping him at all (as silly as that sounds – a player making the team because he can be an emergency catcher)? I mean, if Yadi can’t go the first week of the season (but doesn’t warrant a DL stint), then we have three options: 1) Make a roster move to bring in Pagnozzi (not preferred) 2) Go with just one catcher (not preferred) 3) Leave Craig off the team and give his spot to Stavinoha.
Before, I was sure Craig was going and not Stavinoha…now, I’m not so sure. I’m getting the impression that it’s much closer than that. And I’m not sure how I feel about it, quite yet…
